Process thinking

Prozess orientation and associated process thinking in companies can lead to substantial improvements regarding efficiency and productivity. In this context the following general equation can be disposed:

Process orientation = Customer orientation = Value orientation

  Prozessdenken Eng. 01

Which characteristics can be set up to illustrate these major principles and how are they connected?

Process orientation:
  • Modelling of repeatable working steps in processes,
  • Adherence of process principles,
  • Adjustment of corporate structures,
  • Redesign of all management systems.
The consequent application of the 'Input – Performance – Output' approach as the basic model of all process definitions ensures the customer focus in each working step.

Customer orientation:
  • Definition of standardized product and service requirements,
  • Determination of customer specific and valuable adjustments,
  • Transparence regarding customer requirements in all processes,
  • Consideration of customer needs in all process objectives.

A substantial integration of all customer requirements within the process performance descriptions enable the company to question all process steps or performance levels, where customers are not willing to pay for. This process principle leads to a consequent value orientation.

Value orientation:
  • Concentration on valuable processes and process steps,
  • High amount of business processes rather than support our management processes,
  • Process costs as a leading success varaible for process management,
  • Significant increase of business efficiency within process orientated organisations.

Value orientation is an implicit principle of process management, because of the permanent focus on process steps and processes and the related willingness of customers to pay for it. Waste (japanese: Muda) can be avoided already within the process modelling as part of process management.
